Balance Ready™: Strengthen Your Core and Enhance Your Stability with Effective Workout Routines for Seniors

Balance is a crucial aspect of our overall health, especially as we age. Poor balance can lead to serious health problems and an increased risk of falls. Fortunately, there are ways to enhance your balance and reduce these risks. In this blog post, we’ll introduce you to Balance Ready™, an exercise series designed by physical therapist Deanna Savant. This series aims to improve balance in seniors through targeted exercises that you can practice at home.

What is Balance Ready™?

Balance Ready™ is a comprehensive exercise program created by Deanna Savant, a physical therapist with over 30 years of experience. This series combines elements of dance, Pilates, yoga, and fitness with evidence-based rehabilitation techniques to help seniors improve their balance, coordination, and overall strength. The program offers five classes with lifetime access, designed for recurring participation to build and practice balance over time.

Benefits of the Balance Ready™ Exercise Series

Participating in Balance Ready™ classes can provide a significant transformation in your well-being, including:

  • Improved Balance: Enhance your ability to maintain stability in various positions and movements.

  • Better Coordination: Increase your body's ability to work harmoniously, improving everyday functions.

  • Increased Strength: Build muscle strength, particularly in your legs and core, to support better balance.

  • Fall Prevention: Reduce the risk of falls through improved balance and strength.

  • Enhanced Daily Function: Apply spine-safe principles to daily activities, making everyday movements safer and more efficient.

Sample Exercises from the Balance Ready™ Series

  • Calf Raises: Lift your heels off the ground while standing, starting with both legs and progressing to one leg at a time.

  • Lunges: Take a large step forward with one leg and lower your body into a lunge position, keeping your torso upright and your front knee aligned with your second or third toe. Stay within a pain-free range of motion. Even a step forward is considered a mini-lunge!

  • Sit to Stand: Practice sitting down and standing up from a chair with different arm positions, such as arms on your thighs, straight out in front, or crossed over your chest.

  • Ready Position: Bend your knees slightly, stick your buttocks out, tighten your abdominals, and bring your elbows in as if you are a baseball player waiting in the outfield. Hold this position for a few seconds to build foundational balance.

  • Tandem Stance: Place one foot directly in front of the other and hold for 20 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
